Why are the spreads with that difference? Why the buy price is not dropping as well? That would encourage people to buy, if the buy price comes down as well. I'm not going to put money in if selling means to do it for a 40% difference!

To answer your question, spreads have been temporarily increased in order to protect player values during the current pandemic and associated economic and football uncertainty.
Now is a great time to take advantage of many low prices and current promotion and reap the rewards a few months down the line - assuming you are confident that you won't need to withdraw any time soon.
Nobody is forcing you to buy so stay clear if you aren't comfortable with the market right now.

Long story short.
If they reduce the spreads, they release the Kraken.
I would instant sell and leave the platform for 3-6 months, many more would do the same. I don't particularly need the money, but I know many other users do, and alot of money will leave the platform.
My actions would be the equivalent of being the first out of the office on hearing a fire alarm ... it might be unnecessary, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
As it stands, my portfolio is relatively stagnant and most importantly, stable.
I'll happily sit in this position for another 3 months, but if you give me the opportunity to leave at a reasonable cost (by lowering spreads) I'll bite your hand off!
If you reduce the spreads it will be carnage and I fear that almost everyone will ultimately lose out.

The comment is correct though. Football has been cancelled and we have no date when it will return and yet buy prices (overall) have hardly fallen at all. FI have tried to make the most of MB and promotions but even so an index based on football with no football it almost looks bad that price falls haven't happened.
I thought I understood the mechanism that buy prices will reduce if a certain number of shares are instant sold or listed for sale. If so, why does the following not happen. I list enough shares for sale in a player and eventually the price will fall by 1 pence. Then I relist my shares for sale at the new price, and so on. The price should keep on falling until it reaches a level at which i sell?

surely its good that price falls havent happened as it means the market is more stable than you expected?
-
@NewUser565183 The price will drop when sales go through, but nobody is IS (due to the spread) and not many people are buying due to the uncertainty. They need to keep the money in FI hence the wide spread. If everyone could get out at little to no loss then people would and then start again when the footy comes back.
-
@Brane_Orsou its not the selling of the shares that drops the price, its listing them. Obviously IS also drops the price but hardly anyone is ISing for good reason.

Because there is money tied up in shares that can't be sold because of IS, I am not sure there is enough liquidity about to take advantage of however much increased MB is offered.
