Time to talk about James Ward-Prowse

  • I have patiently held off writing this for 18 months, despite the fact he was my first purchase- my first love on the Index. But I think now is the time to talk about JWP cos I cant wait any longer ;)

So here comes my excited, yet hilariously biased review.

    1. His all round game has had two major boosts this season. There was always a super talented footballer there, but it took a wee bit longer for him to piece together his game, the role he plays and what his strengths are. Turns out his defensive strengths were far higher than we could ever have imagined. He now wins the ball back, tenacious in the midfield, best passer of a ball at the club, now passes forward to connect defense to attack, takes freekicks, corners and has a wicked cross. His game massively improved since the 9-0, but since the restart and made captain he has pushed himself onto a higher level.

    2. This massive improvement in his game is reflected in his pb scores. Sometimes we see excellent footballers, but dont have a pb game. Since the restart his PB average is a whopping 155 across 9 games. That's with just 1 goal and 0 assists. With such a solid PB score, he is always gonna be a goal away from challenging for PB divs. Since the restart he has won 1 gold day, and come equal first on another (lost out by age) so there is some evidence to back that up.

    3. Age and price. Whilst it may feel like he has been around forever, he is only 25. And only .95p. That means there are 470 players more expensive than him. So plenty of room for cap app. Im also not saying he will return 50p worth of divs, but 20p in the next 12 months is within him. That would be just over a 20% return.

    4. England call up. Sure there are a few injuries, but it is well known that Southgate loves him since the under 21. Hopefully he gets a chance this time and can cement himself in the squad. His versatility (best right back at the club as well) should help.

Thanks for listening, I just couldnt resist any longer!

  • @Dr-Jan-Itor if he was any good Liverpool would have bought him by now...😆

Only issues I can think of are that I'd be wary about drawing too much from the restart games, all a bit fucked up!

He has a decent PB average but his max last season was just over 200 so unlikely to win too much? Also he plays for a non CL/EC team so less chances to win

He is also competing against the likes of Paredes and even Fabinho who are 20% cheaper, similar age, playing for big clubs with European games and have higher div returns

If he left Southampton for a bigger club it would be tempting!

Fair points. I actually happen to think Fabinho is a little under priced. I guess what holds him back is that for all Liverpools extra games in Europe, he only managed managed to play a full 90 in PB qualifying games 26 times this season which is 12 less than JWP. His average PB score for Liverpool for 90 minutes games is 119 (so still good, with multiplier it is 125) which coincidentally is the same as JWP. I am most interested in the stats from JWP since he raised his game. Even if you take before lockdown and to January his PB average is still a very good 135. The gamble is- will he maintain it?Personally I think yes, and I reckon most Saints fans think the same. But of course there is an element of risk, but my personal belief is that his PB base is strong, and so if he can get a couple more goals (and he does get in the position to score them, so it's not like he hangs back at halfway line) could make him even more compeititive next season.

Paredes though I am not sure is the right example you are looking for. Sure, when he gets to play a full 90 his stats are phenomenal. But he has only played 8 full PB eligible games this season and hasnt won dividends, albeit he has been unlucky.

I actually went and took your comparison a step further and looked at all the 24-26 year old centre midfielders currently priced similarly or higher (stats as of last night) which i think demonstrates he is competitive in his cohort. I should also note that also includes the start of the season when Saints were shit.

  • Had him in my watchlist from when I started in Jan but have never bought. Something has just always put me off to be honest. Don't see him moving so no transfer links, don't see Southampton in Europe anytime soon and I am actually surprised hes been called up to the England squad. The loss of PEH may hinder him as well but we will see.

  • @Dr-Jan-Itor that's weird, Indexgain have Paredes winning 16p of divs from 22 games this season?

But yes if he can keep it up (hopefully the England call up might be a catalyst) and maybe get into the squad for the Euros then who knows?👍

Agree that's weird, I have the following players who have made .16p of divs
    Sebastian Andersson
    Uros Matic
    Ansu Fati
    Charles Aranguiz
    Ross Barkley
    Thiago Alcántara
    Leon Goretzka
    Gonzalo Higuaín
    Maxwel Cornet
    David Silva
    Anthony Martial
    Chris Smalling
    Theo Hernandez
    Sergio Canales
    Predrag Rajkovic
    Domenico Berardi
    Joris Gnagnon
    Andrej Kramaric

I haven't paid any attention to Parades so totally reliant on data supplier. Let me know if you get to bottom of, I dont want to be using bad data!

  • Fantastic to see my boy get a start today. Really hoping he shows off how his game has evolved. I know people probably have a perception that he is a set piece specialist and can recycle the ball a bit like Winks, but he really is so much more than that. Really hoping he shows it today!
