Better to buy shares before the share split or after?

  • Can anyone tell me if it would be better to invest in players before the share split so when it happens you have more futures or is it better to wait for the share split and invest in more futures at a cheaper price? Thanks

  • It all depends on whether you think prices are likely to increase or decrease in a particular player. If you think they’ll increase, but now. If you think they’ll decrease, wait and buy later.

If prices stay the same, the split is irrelevant because as an example you either have 100 futures at £10 each or 400 futures at £2.50 each. Total value is still the same.

  • It also depends on how many shares will be required to move a player by 1p after the split

  • @CraigM could you please elaborate?

  • The idea behind the share split is to make the top players more affordable and appealing to traders - if you log in with £10 and get a £10 referral bonus, you're unlikely to be interested in buying one Neymar and watching that go up and down by pennies. If he's a fiver, you could get a couple and then spend 10 quid on other cheap players.
If this plays true then it makes sense to stock up before the split, although the expectation by some that prices will rocket straight after may leave a few people disappointed. I can see slow growth initially rather than shares doubling and trebling overnight. That said, it is a gamble and prices could go down too so do your research on players who you think will increase anyway, and any bonus provided by the share split is a nice treat

  • Wouldn’t getting them before the split be good because you may well get 4x shares so 10 shares in a player would go up to 40 and if you’ve got the patience to keep hold of them for say another year surely they may do another split in the future which would make 40 shares 160 ! Or is that to much wishful thinking @GregF

Yeah but you are in essence getting 40 quarter shares.

It all depends on whether people think prices will increase. Most think they will and these things are normally self fulfilling ... Basically if people think prices will rise after SS they will buy, people will see and sheep them essentially fulfilling the expectation.

There is a possibility that people are expecting a relative dividend rise though and if that doesn't happen, could decide to bail out causing a drop.

  • @NewUser29017 that's long term thinking, 2 share splits!! Although with your user number, I'm guessing you've been on a while. Were you here for the last one?
